A Clinical Study for Postoperative Complication in Colo-rectal surgery

Abstract
A clinical study was made on 95 cases of postoperative complications after colo-rectal surgery which have been treated at Chonnam university hospital from March 1972 to February 1975. The results were as follow;
1. The surgical complications were 42.1% (40 cases).
2. The most frequent postoperative complication was wound infection (19 cases, 20.0%).
3. The complications for disease were Ulcerative colitis (4 cases, 66.7%), Colo-rectal cancer (16 cases, 42. 1%) and Intussusception (6 cases, 42.9%).
4. The most common postoperative complication for operative procedure was Miles¢¥ operat-ion (52.3%).
5. The sex ratio was 43.7% in male and 37.5% in female. Male preponderance was observed.
6. Patients with previous infection have more complications than patients without previous infection. Patients with anemia have much more complications than patients without anemia. Shock does not affect complications.
7. Emergency operation contributed more to development of postoperative complication than elective operation.
8. The complication of colon prepared patient was 42. 3% and unprepared patient was 40.0%.
9. Fecal fistula due to disruption of suture line was 13.7% in all colo-rectal surgery. Most frequent site was colo-colonic anastomosis.
10. The most common complication of colostomy was passage disturbance (4 cases, 13.8%).
11. Mortality rate was 10.5%. Cause of death were septicemia (5 cases, 5.3%) and pul-monary complications (2 cases, 21%).
